In many Latinx households, whiteness is complicated. Mine is no exception. We are all Colombian-born. My mom is white with green eyes - my father is dark with Afro-Caribbean roots. When talking to them about police violence the difference was clear.
My mom said “we have to stand up for them” and my dad (a tow-truck driver in the south Bronx) said “the police fucks with us.”
And because of class and education I have access to institutions and information they don’t even know exists.
